Always ready for an adventure, a friend and I decided to do a little pub hopping this Friday. If you’re feeling antsy in Van, pubs are usually your best choice as there’s generally no cover. We found three great options within walking distance of one another: Black Frog, London Pub, and the Brickhouse.
Nestled down the road from the famous Steam Clock, Black Frog (108 Cambie Street, http://www.theblackfrog.ca/) is a bumpin’, no-fuss place to get a few drinks. It’s dark and sporty, with a bar that stretches to the ceiling with liquor and memorabilia. Random nineties rock thrown in with a few contemporary hits was pumped up just loud enough to interrupt your conversation without preventing it completely. They have pretty good daily specials, including $4.25 pints of Big Rock beer or cider.
Next up was London Pub (700 Main), a new venture on the corner of Main and East Georgia. We chose to walk there via Pender, thereby avoiding the sketchier bits of Hastings. A much needed addition to the Strathcona neighbourhood, London Pub is reminiscent of the Lamplighter in Gastown (minus the insane crowds). There are beautiful brick archways, pool tables, and lots of tables for lounging. The drinks aren’t as cheap as I’d like, especially considering the area, but they’re well-made and probably priced to match the ambience of the bar.
Finally we ambled down the road to the Brickhouse (730 Main Street). This hipster haunt had been up on to-do list for a while, so I was happy to finally make it over. It’s essentially the living room of someone’s grandfather who was probably way cooler than you. There’s art everywhere, an assortment of worn out couches, and a raised area with a pool table. It’s a super intimate space that feels like a house party just when it’s starting to get good. Winter bonus? Free coat check. Also try the holiday nog. It’s the perfect accompaniment to the living room vibe.
