In the not-too-distant future, all of the world’s problems are solved. Climate change is mitigated, poverty is eradicated, and all species exist equally. But, of course, there’s a catch—humans must end life at the age of 50.
This is the world of Can I Get A Witness?, a new live-action and animated film from Canadian filmmaker Ann Marie Fleming, starring Sandra Oh, Kiera Jang, and Joel Oulette.
The film first premiered at TIFF 2024, and was part of TIFF’s Canada’s Top Ten showcase last month. Now, audiences can watch Can I Get a Witness? in select theatres starting March 14. Today, SheDoesTheCity is excited to premiere an exclusive clip from the upcoming film.
In Can I Get A Witness?, Kiera Jang stars as Kiah, a teenage artist tasked with documenting end-of-life protocols for those turning 50. Despite encouragement from her mother Ellie (Sandra Oh), an ex-Documentor herself, and her upbeat mentor Daniel (Joel Oulette), Kiah struggles with her new role.
Director Ann Marie Fleming was first inspired to create the film following the devastating 2006 windstorm that levelled 41 hectares of forest in Vancouver’s iconic Stanley Park. Nearly two decades later, the film is more timely than ever, as we continue to see the worldwide effects of climate change.
In a press statement, Fleming said of her film: “It has points to make about consumption, about the climate and the environment, but also about kindness. The film is a meditation on how precious and beautiful this world is and our time on it.”
With elements of sci-fi and dystopia, and interwoven with animations, the film also takes an emotional and introspective look at the realities of this new way of living.
“I had never read anything like (this script) before”, added Sandra Oh in the press statement. “I felt that Ann Marie was touching on, in numerous places, extremely profound and tender spots about what it is to be human.”
We’re excited to premiere this exclusive clip from the film, in which Kiah questions the details of her new role.
