Breakthroughs Film Festival is the only festival in Canada devoted exclusively to screening short films by women and non binary directors. For that reason, we obviously love it, but in its ten years, BFF has also continuously wowed us with their phenomenal programming.

For emerging filmmakers, the wonderfully warm and welcoming community is the ideal launching pad. It should also be noted that BFF prioritizes the work, expressions, and experiences of folks who identify as Indigenous, Black, People of Colour, trans, non-binary, working class, neurodiverse, or people with disabilities, and they encourage filmmakers to self-identify in their bios.

The 2021 theme is ‘VISIBLE/INVISIBLE’, which means they want submissions that “explore and interrogate the ways in which the work of womxn is often devalued, hidden, and disrespected, but yet always needed”. OH, we have ideas.

If you are curious, but aren’t sure if you should apply, we strongly encourage you to go for it. BFF is where many Canadian filmmakers began their journey, and it’s the perfect introduction to the festival circuit.
