December 6 is the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women. In honour of the lives lost at Polytechnique de Montréal on December 6, 1989, Seneca’s Newnham Campus is hosting A Civil Engagement…With Women in Engineering Practices, where an esteemed, all-female panel will engage in a discussion about STEM and the impact the horrific events at Polytechnique de Montréal may have had on women in tech.

Women still encounter barriers in the workplace, from pay inequality to “the glass ceiling” effect. This is especially true in science, technology, engineering, mathematics and computer science (STEM), where the problems start as early as high school. To encourage women’s participation and to increase representation, Engineers Canada has a goal of raising the percentage of newly licensed women engineers to 30 per cent by the year 2030.

The Civil Engagement panel includes eight successful female graduates from Seneca’s Civil Engineering Technology program (who now work for Toronto Transit Commission, York Region and Region of Peel), who will share their individual experiences, successes and wisdom in the world of STEM.
