Beginning May 11, Hot Docs Cinema will be presenting a theatrical run of Maya Gallus’ documentary The Heat: A Kitchen (R)evolution, about female chefs who are revolutionizing the restaurant industry and challenging male domination in the kitchen.
While the famed personalities in the restaurant industry are typically those macho, brazen “bad boy” chefs (you know the ones), The Heat focuses the lens on the women who are taking command, revolutionizing the world’s top kitchens and reversing the longstanding (and often problematic) restaurant culture.
In her latest doc, Gallus (a Canadian and Gemini Award-winning director) profiles seven female chefs who are breaking barriers in the food industry worldwide. From New York City’s Anita Lo and Amanda Cohen to the queen of French cuisine, Anne-Sophie Pic (and Toronto’s own Suzanne Barr), the women share their struggles to overcome a system of inequality while serving up delicious dishes.
