Toronto’s The Beaches (Jordan & Kylie Miller, Eliza Enman-McDaniel and Leandra Earl) are an all-woman rock band that just clinched a Juno award for Breakthrough Artist of the Year.
Now, they’re kicking off their first-ever national headline tour beginning in Vancouver, making sixteen stops across Canada, and finishing off in Toronto on May 11.
We chatted with them this week.
SDTC: What’s at the top of your bucket list?
Jordan: Get a kiss from Harry Styles.
What’s your go-to song for getting stuff done?
Eliza: “Mr. Blue Sky” by Electric Blade Orchestra
Leandra: “La La Land” by Demi Lovato
Jordan: “Hung Up” by Madonna
Kylie: “Chills” by James Barker Band
If you could go back in time and tell your younger self anything, what would it be?
Kylie: You don’t need four pairs of Crocs and you don’t need charms on them.
What word/phrase should we be saying more often?
Eliza: “Bitchin'”
Who/what are you sick of hearing about?
Jordan: The Kardashians.
Who has made a big impact in your life recently, and how?
Eliza: I met a guy on the airplane flying back from the Junos and it was like we had been best friends forever. I am typically a closed-off person who doesn’t open easily, so meeting this guy reminded me that you can surprise yourself by stepping outside of your boundaries.
What does your ideal Saturday look like?
Jordan: Sleeping in, drinks with girlfriends in Kensington, a warehouse party with a bunch of cute guys in wet t-shirts.
Leandra: Anything but that.
What’s the best part of being your current age?
Eliza: We don’t have to take anything too seriously.
Leandra: We can still live with our parents and not feel ashamed.
What art work would you love to have in your space/on your walls, and why?
Jordan: We have a lot of my art work in my space because I am a prolific illustrator and we can’t afford good art work. So our space is full of creepy drawings of friends and celebrities with dead eyes.
Fave rainy day comfort food?
Kylie: Mac and cheese.
When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?
Leandra and Jordan: Avril Lavigne.
What was your favourite game/toy as a child?
Eliza: Nintendo 64.
Jordan: LARPing.
Kylie: My Furby.
What do you love most about Toronto?
Jordan: My community of friends.
Eliza: The music scene.
What adult task would you like to get better at?
Leandra: Doing/understanding my taxes.
What is one little-known fact about The Beaches?
Jordan: More about me than the band but I’ve never eaten fruit and I have an intense fear of it.
If you could spend a year studying something, what would it be?
Jordan: History.
Leandra: Classical music.
Kylie: Cooking.
What is your idea of happiness?
Jordan: Finding something fulfilling that you love doing. Finding a community of friends and loved ones who love and respect you and laugh at all of your jokes.
