DYLYN is the latest project from Gwendolyn Lewis, a Toronto-based artist who fell into the same fate as many of her contemporaries…chasing pop hits down a rabbit hole, nearly losing herself in the process. Now she’s done playing the game and ready to create a sound true to her roots. Thus, DYLYN was born – with ’80s synths, sultry vocals, rock and roll that bleeds authenticity.
We caught up with her this week.
SDTC: What’s at the top of your bucket list?
GL: I still have a lot of travelling to do: China, Australia and Thailand. And a Top 10 single would be nice, and if that happens, I’d get a tattoo.
What’s your go-to song for getting stuff done?
Currently: “I’m on a new level” – ASAP Ferg
Always: “Bulls on Parade” – Rage Against the Machine
What advice would you give to your fourteen-year-old self?
Don’t put so much pressure on yourself and stop being so negative. What you put out in the world comes back to you. Say no to the bangs next year (terrible hairstyle choice).
Who has made a big impact in your life recently, and how?
A natural healer helped me let go of a lot of pressures I put on myself and can’t control. I was wound up so tight as a person this past year. She is slowly teaching me to let it go and let it flow.
What does your ideal Saturday look like?
Usually off the grid with my SO or possibly playing Call of Duty, Zombies with my brother. And on a rare occasion, mixing in some JD.
What is your favourite quality in your best friend?
Her dry humour, goofiness and borderline sick humour.
What/who is currently inspiring you?
The Cure, old Madonna, Jewel Tones and Missy Elliot.
What art work would you love to have in your space/on your walls, and why?
I always like to design the environment I live in. I’m surrounded by vintage record covers, incredible musicians and some of my favourite movie posters.
Fave rainy day comfort food? Or activity?
Pho, ramen and a good series on Netflix.
When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?
Exactly what I’m doing now, and also a mermaid.
What was your favourite game/toy as a child?
Barbies and Ninja Turtles.
What adult task would you like to get better at?
Social media – if that’s an adult task.
What are you most looking forward to?
Releasing my album and going on tour. I live for performing. And also Season 2 of The Handmaid’s Tale.
If you could spend a year studying something, what would it be?
Interior Design. (Who’s to say I’m not already doing it?)
