The legendary Michie Mee is Canada’s first female MC. She will be part of a panel discussion following a screening of Hip Hop Evolution, the yearly Regent Park Film Festival Fundraiser on October 19th; the 14th Annual Regent Park Film Festival is this coming November. We chatted her this week.
SDTC: What should we be paying more attention to?
MM: That inner voice, your family and your health. Anything that gives you strength – whether it be friends, books, music, groups, movies (that include hip hop), and things that make you laugh and breathe easy. You can’t avoid the chaos in the world so find cool in-between and in-the-meantime stuff! Oh yeah, and don’t forget the bubbles in the bath.
What was the last Netflix series you binged on?
Luke Cake, baby! And 60 Days In.
One new thing you learned this year?
How to do the Master Cleanse/lemonade diet. Loved it. It’s a ritual now.
What memory brings a smile to your face?
Watching my Grandmother Mama Lou cook. May she RIP. Her smile 🙂
How do you recharge your batteries?
I follow my answers from the first question [copy & paste here] and smile. A good trip back home to Jamaica never hurts or visiting good ol’ NYC and Jersey where more family live.
Describe the funniest thing you’ve experienced in recent memory.
Watching and listening to my son imitate my mother’s voice and sayings while conversing with me as I join in, right in front of her. Even she can’t help but laugh. Moms are fun.
Best advice you’ve been given?
“Save your money and it will save you.”
What is the best part of being your current age?
I don’t give a shit, yet I care so much…I give myself permission daily to be Mee.
What word or phrase should we use more often?
“Give thanks” and you can feel or put whatever you’re thankful for right after it. Also, “Hold ah meds” (Jamaican accent included).
What’s on your night table?
Bible, lamp and a coaster.
Weirdest thing in your purse right now?
The dark brown/black hair eyelash brush thingy bought in the drug store that I use to cover the grey hairs – especially before auditions. #dontjudgemee lol #nolol
What trends are you loving right now?
Hoodies and leather jackets…fall is here!
Who was your celebrity crush when you were a kid?
LL Cool J , DJ Scratch of the group EMPD, Nas & (okay fine) Mr. Kobe Bryant…then he took Brandy to her prom and I lost it.
What should people check out in Toronto this month?
The Regent Park Film Festival (Daniels Spectrum, 585 Dundas Street East) on Wednesday October 19 for Hip Hop Evolution directed by Darby Wheeler. 6:30PM Cocktail Reception. 8:00PM Film Screening & Panel.
