Toronto-based songstress Megan Bonnell is set to release her new album, Magnolia, on April 15th. You can give her first single, Can’t Have You, a listen here. We caught up with Megan last week.
SDTC: What spaces in Toronto do you find inspiring?
MB: My favorite is High Park. It’s such a big space with rolling hills and ponds. My dog, Dave loves it there because he can run around off-leash and pretend to be a free man. Roncesvalles in the summer time…I love walking up the strip there and popping into local grocers for my supplies. It’s so charming and almost has a small-town vibe. Then winding through the beautiful neighborhoods on my way home.
What aisle do you spend the most time in at the grocery store?
Definitely the aisle that has the “spreads” on one side and cereal on the other. My indecisiveness really gets to have a heyday in that aisle. Do I want a blackberry-blueberry-bumble berry jam? Or apricot explosion? Classic Shreddies?
Can you tell me your fave joke?
If you have a choice between regular heaven and pie heaven, choose pie heaven. It might be a trick, but if not….mmmmmm boy!
The receipts in your wallet would indicate what?
That every day I decide “today will be the day I finally get organized and start collecting all of my receipts to keep track of my spending”, and that another 3 weeks later “today will be the day that I finally get organized and start collecting all of my receipts to keep track of my spending.”
What would your high school yearbook have said about you–most likely to???
Most likely to not develop a software program.
What would you be if you weren’t a musician?
I think I would like to be a farmer.
What makes you happy?
Coffee. Hanging out with my family and friends. Inappropriate jokes. Nature. Dave. Playing music.
What makes you cringe?
Tissue ripping. The noise gives me shivers.
What, in your opinion, is overrated?
Pop-tarts. Jerry Seinfeld said it best when he said, “they can’t go stale because they were never fresh”.
Person you’d most like to meet?
Steve Martin.
What is the best thing you did all week?
Washed my hair.
Describe your perfect Saturday:
Wake up, walk the dog and go get coffee at Ella’s Uncle. Eat a piece of fresh banana bread in the sun. Saunter home popping into shops along the way. Grab groceries in Roncesvalles and then have a BBQ while drinking a big ol’ glass of wine.
Describe the funniest thing you’ve ever witnessed.
I was walking behind someone at the Junos, who was wearing their sunglasses inside the arena. It looked like they were feeling pretttty good about themselves. They then proceeded to slip and fall. Their sunglasses soared across the hall. I had to laugh..It felt like the universe was saying, “Tone it down a bit there bud.”
What word or phrase should we all use more?
Is it too late now to say sorry?
Before the album drops, Megan will be performing at Adelaide Hall with Jordan Klassen on Saturday, April 2nd.
