Meet Kate Morgan, an exciting up-and-coming, Vancouver-based singer/songwriter who is quickly gaining traction with her new single titled Extra Ordinary.
A natural-born risk taker, Morgan left home at 16 to pursue her dreams of getting into music. In 2010, she became the youngest performer ever to play Lilith Fair, sharing the stage with Sarah McLachlan, Sheryl Crow, and Erykah Badu among others. This led to other festival performances including Vans Warped Tour, Squamish, the Salmon Arm Roots and Blues Festival, Canadian Music Week and the Telus World Ski/Snowboard Festival.
After spending time as a co-writer for such artists as multi-Platinum pop songstress Carly Rae Jepsen, it is now time for Morgan herself to take centre stage.
Morgan was in Toronto this week and we got a chance to catch up with her about her favourite spots in the city and her love of musicals.
What are your favourite places in Toronto?
The Drake. House Guest. Well-crafted cocktails are my jam.
What meal brings you immense pleasure?
Chicken. Pot. Pie.
The receipts in your wallet would indicate what?
Considering they’re all in this crumpled-up ball at the bottom of my purse – probably just that I’m disorganized and that I like coffee.
What did you think you were going to be when you were 8 years old?
Britney Spears.
What makes you happy?
Hiking, dogs, food, friends, loved ones, and reading Harry Potter.
What makes you cringe?
When people cut in line. Like, you’re an adult, you should have a better understanding of this whole lining up concept.
What quality do you loathe most in others?
Is it wrong to say line cutting again? But I don¹t know, I don’t think there’s any particular quality I really loathe. Some people just rub you the wrong way. I¹m getting over trying to figure that out. Learning to follow the good vibes instead of putting energy into the bad ones (hippie alert).
What, in your opinion, is overrated?
Black Friday shopping.
What is the one thing you wish you could change about yourself? Why?
Nothin’ baby! Even the parts I don’t like about myself I wouldn¹t change – they make me Kate.
As a child or teen, what first got you really interested in music?
Musicals probably first. Sound of Music and Grease are ones that stick out.
What word or phrase should we use more often?
“Totally Buggin.”
When do you feel most creative?
In the middle of the night. Or in nature.
Art is _______?
Expressing yourself in whatever way sets your heart free.
