The Better Way : Your guide to riding the TTC with class

by Karen Cleveland
I grew up in a small town where I drove an hour to and from high school every day. Admitedly, I had a bit of a learning curve when first introduced to the TTC but after a few years, I think I got the hang of it.

Here are my cardinal rules of public transit:

1. Don’t act like you are too good to ride the TTC (if you are, you wouldn’t be on it). So please do not rest your bags on the seat beside you while others stand. There is no first-class section, so act accordingly.
2. Treat public transit like the 401. If the flow is moving quickly, pick up the pace. If it’s slow, deal with it and move with the traffic. Avoid dodging and weaving.
3.When it’s packed, don’t be a dirty-door-blocker. Move away from the doors so people can enter and exit.
4. While we’re sure you have swell taste in music, no one else wants to hear it. If you listen to your ipod, ensure you’re the only person listening to it.
5. If you see someone staring at a TTC map, please go offer help with directions. Make it your good deed of the day. Likewise if you see someone scrambling for change to make the fare. It’s the better way.

These rules should be posted

These rules should be posted everywhere in the TTC so that people don't act like ignorant fools!

The TTC is what makes me want to get a car and not care so much about the environment.. I think there is a significant group of people who would do the same

I have to agree with Rocco

I have to agree with Rocco on the nail clipping why do people think it's okay to do that on the subway or in any public space? It's just plan rude. And also listen to number 4, blaring your music so the whole subway/street car can hear it won't make you any friends! Karen love the TTC tips and here's to people fallowing them! I just have to add one more - please don't pick your nose on the TTC. Even if you think you're being clever and hiding it being a book or a newspaper you're not fooling anyone we can see you. They're not some magical force field that makes you invisible so please don't do it!!

I hope people listen to

I hope people listen to this, especially number 5. The first time I tried to use the subway I stared at that map or spent forever trying to find the map! Now that I am a little more comfortable I help people whenever I can.

Love,
Mel

TTC etiquette cannot be

TTC etiquette cannot be touted enough if you ask me.
I'd like to add:

--> no pushing. i mean, come on now! i shouldn't have to say that, especially to the likes of people who have pushed me on the TTC. Yeah, you heard me grandma.

--> absolutely postively no clipping your nails on the subway, bus, streetcar or frankly in any public space. again i cannot believe i have to stress this, but i have seen and heard this soooooo many times on the ttc.

--> if you've got a big bag with you, you are responsible to NOT bang people repeatedly with said bag. do NOT put it over your shoulder and act all innocent like you don't realize the kind of space you are taking up, or like you don't notice when you nearly take someone's arm off with it.

oh i could go on and on but i won't.

anyway good on ya, karen, for spreading the good ttc word.
