DYK we now buy 60% more clothing today than we did 20 years ago? Not only that, we only keep them for half as long. Every year we throw out enough textiles to fill the Roger’s Centre three times over—not ideal!
This week, Fashion Takes Action and the Ontario Textile Diversion Collaborative are rolling out their new campaign: Give Clothes A New Life. The campaign introduces the new 7R’s of Fashion: Recycle, Rent, Reduce, Repurpose, Repair, Reuse and Resale; and gives a list of resources to accomplish all that. For instance, you can donate your gently used clothes to thrift stores, clothing donation bins or to your municipal drop-off depot. You can buy vintage, rent a dress instead of buying new (Fitzroy Rentals are our faves for this), resell your clothes on Facebook Marketplace or Bunz, or learn how to mend your own garments at a Repair Cafe. You can make a positive impact!
