The Canadian fashion industry is constantly in search of new visions and fresh interpretations. One that I recently had the pleasure of discovering is Lily + Jae, a charming Vancouver-based fashion line with pieces ranging from brilliantly tailored hoodies to sundresses that make you want to have tea parties in the park.
After spending six years on film sets, costumer Judith Feller decided it was time to break out and follow her dream. Let it be known that those six years were not spent in vain. While working seventeen-hour days steaming, altering, and rubbing elbows with the who’s who of the film industry, Judith met one of her most famous supporters – Oscar nominated Sarah Polley. In fact, it was Polley who came up with Lily + Jae’s slogan – ‘tomboy flirting with femininity.” This is fitting considering Judith grew up with two brothers and three sisters, yet she chose to hang with the boys, snowboarding, skating, and taking cues from her earliest fashion influence – Punky Brewster.
Looking back, Judith’s family dynamic has had quite the influence on her work. Her biggest inspiration lies in combining men’s and women’s clothing in a comfortable and fashion-forward way. Just grab your brother’s hoodie then grandma’s blouse and blammo!
Feller seeks to bring out “the girl in every woman.” This season especially tells a very sweet story and is based around innocent flirtation – like the beautiful white-on-white ice-cream cone that greets you upon entering her site. Another favourite is the spring ’08 look book….if you pay close attention you’ll see that the male model gets blown off in the end – in true Lily + Jae fashion!
Trick question: What do Lily Allen, Amy Smart, and Ashlee Simpson have in common? They’ve all been spotted wearing her line! So who else would Judith LOVE to see sporting her duds? While having a celebrity following is incredible, Judish is most flattered by the everyday woman wearing her clothes.
I wanted to know how the career change came about, it’s not every day that a budding designer quits their day job and goes on to have a thriving career. Judith actually went to fashion school, prior to her stint in film, but was turned off after a discouraging internship.
So what does Judith do for fun these days? She still likes hitting the slopes, but admits to having little time for hobbies. She’s busy all the time – be it designing her next line, drafting patterns, or participating in conventions – Judith does it all. When she does find a bit of time to relax, she’ll lace up her roller skates.
It still hasn’t fully hit Feller her yet – she’s the real deal – a clothing designer with a growing business, beautiful garments, and a celebrity following! She just smiles, and tells me its slowly sinking in, however, I have a feeling that when Judith’s life catches up with her, she’s in for a serious screaming and jumping episode in her living room!
