Style Crush! Inciting A Style Formula from Up & Coming New It-Girl Polina Frantsena

By Shelley Budd
Dressing for anything one-notch more glamorous than a dinner at Hapa Izakaya can easily progress into a decoration of the lamps, ceiling fan and an entire one-block radius outside my apartment with tossed and toe-holed leggings and inside-out dresses that just don’t look right. So why not coach the closet into providing the necessary elements to make it a synch to pull together a chic outfit in a pinch? Let’s learn from what works.

There’s yet to be a Wikipedia entry for Polina Frantsena, Moscow born Twenty-Something Girl #1 in the new Sex and the City movie, and model paired with a winning designer on Project Runway. Both her career and style are fresher than fish at the market. We love her, because she rocks this simple and classy look, the components of which can be the go-to blueprint for a dinner date or noteworthy event outfit, and we hope there’s more of her to come. read more...

On the last episode you won the challenge and have had your dress displayed in Winners stores across Canada, how did this make you feel?
It was so amazing to win the Winners Spring Dress Challenge!! I mean so far, it has been the best challenge to win. It is the first time that a piece will be produced, and sold, in the competition. But aside from that, and how exciting it all is, the judges, finally realized that I have a lot of talent and skill, which they hadn't really see from me yet. I am so proud of that dress, and it is such an opportunity for a young designer like myself. read more...

Project Runway presents the quintessential Spring Dress

Project Runway presents the quintessential Spring Dress

Recessionistas, take note! Project Runway Canada and Winners are giving you something to look forward to that's coming up a little bit sooner than spring. On tonight's episode, the seven designers still surviving under Iman's fashionable cut eye will create a spring frock designed for the fashion-savvy and financially-challenged. Watch Global at 10 to see whose design makes the cut, then head to your favourite Winners (we like Front St.) tomorrow to pick up the winning design. The name of the game in this challenge will be versatility, a dress that can move effortlessly from business casual to bar wear, from winter layers to bare arms, and is sure to be as individual as the designers themselves. Bring on Spring!

Party like Paris, not Toronto

Party like Paris, not Toronto

My sincere apologies, city-doers, for my slacking and your lacking of imperative celebrity gossip amidst something about an election. I assure you my absence and this tardy column is due to a series of spooky soirees and fabulous fashion galas, and not piles of (literal and figurative) wasted hours watching Paris Hilton find a new BFF. Either way, partying like Paris ensues. Finally using elementary school’s damn little Ws, a few party tips guaranteed to make you tipsy read more...

A question to the ladies – why do you always get drunk and cry?

A question to the ladies – why do you always get drunk and cry?

Gay or straight, the one thing that unites males (besides having unhealthy relationships with their mothers) is a universal lack of understanding of women. Dames, gals, broads, chicks, skirts, girls, ladies; those with vaginas. Even I, as a gay with literally dozens of (imaginary) girlfriends, have only the most cursory understanding of what makes the girlies tick. Being that I've got this forum that I'm told chicks read, I thought it would be the perfect place to pose some questions for the betterment of all mankind. And believe me, we could use some improvement. read more...
