We’re over a month into summer. Crazy, right? I don’t know about you, but personally I haven’t been nearly as available as I’d like to be to take advantage of that magical place, Warm Weather Toronto: late night strolls by the water, long drives with the windows down, and our city’s pièce de résistance: patios! If you’ve ever attempted to sit on a patio on a sunny day, you know that after a 5-10 minute wait, you will be crammed in with a bunch of other strangers who are similarly trying to sip sangria and forget about their troubles. If you love patios, but are interested in a more secluded experience, check out seven of my very favourite hidden, backyard patios in Toronto.
The Cadillac Lounge—1296 Queen Street West
This huge backyard patio is a great place to unwind after a long day of lounging in the park. The Cadillac Lounge boasts musical and comedy events throughout the week, so come down to check out some of our city’s awesome talent, and stay for a drink out back.
Cold Tea—60 Kensington Avenue
This once well-kept Kensington Market secret (of which I’m sure there are many) is now a popular backyard patio buzzing most nights of the week. If you don’t mind shelling out a few extra dollars for a drink, this trendy-yet-divey bar offers some pretty kick-ass cocktails.
Not My Dog—1510 Queen Street West
This cozy bar in the heart of Parkdale is home to a very intimate backyard patio. This is another great place for checking out the music scene in Toronto. Come here for a date, or by yourself. The intimacy of the bar and patio is very conducive to making new friends!
The Only Cafe—972 Danforth Ave.
With over 25 local craft brews on tap and literally hundreds of bottled beers on the menu, this place is a beer lover’s paradise. And what goes better with a beer than a back patio? Nothing. Exactly.
The Queen Mother Cafe—208 Queen Street West
Located in a historic building in the heart of downtown Toronto, this backyard patio is a mini-getaway within the hustle and bustle of the city. In fact, you’ll be taken through a downstairs maze to reach this hidden gem. Once you get there, enjoy the delicious menu that has earned its fabulous reputation. Come during off-hours to avoid the (very) busy crowds.
Live Organic Food Bar—264 Dupont Street
Need a place that can accommodate your dietary restrictions? Live Organic Food Bar has a great backyard patio and an incredible menu that offers several different food options, depending on your dietary needs! Come here with a large group of friends, this patio can definitely accommodate you!
3Speed—1163 Bloor Street
The cutest ramshackle back patio you ever did see, with a selection of wines, beers, and sharing plates to keep you going into the night or perk you up on an afternoon. Patio perfection!
Whether you’re looking for a place to while away the evening hours with pals, get to know someone you’re interested in, or even meet someone new to get to know (wink!), these backyard patios are a nice repose from the busyness of the city. Plus, you’ll probably see me there! Hiiii.
